"Hi, does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about changing the drive bellow on the Volvo Penta 280? From what I understand 1) you get a stand for the outdrive 2) you disconnect the shift cable 3) somehow disconnect all 3 bellows Drive, Exhaust and cooling 4) Remove the 2 retaining allen screws on from both sides then the 2 from the top steering helmet and poof, just like that it comes off. What am I missing and is there any recourse I could check for step by step instructions? I would love to get this done tonight. Any help would be great! Thanks in advance."

"Ok, I have been trying this thing for hours now and cant get the suspension pins out for the life of me. I cant even get that attachment bolt out of the helmet. I have no clue how to get this stuff out. Please help. What do I do?"

"1) if you want to remove the pins, read this:

2) Here is an online manual for the outdrive:

3) Although I tend to remove the outdrive from the transom shield when replacing the bellows, your easiest way would be removing the upper gear assembly from the intermediate housing. You will have to replace the oil, but the seals between the upper and intemediate housing may or may not be fit for further use.

4) Consider buying a copy of the Seloc manual for your engine and outdrive if you are going to do your own repairs."

"THANK YOU!!! YOU ARE THE MAN!

"THANK YOU!!! YOU ARE THE MAN! This worked perfectly and now, the outdrive is sitting patiently on my garage floor for reinstallation. I did however have a great deal of trouble with the top 4 hole dowel. That would not come out so I thought I could just drop the drive down a bit and pull the bottom upwards then drop the top lower to move the pin out of the helmet. Well, this caused the steering helmet to pull most of the way out of the boat. When I finally got the stubborn helmet off I was able to push the grooved steering rod back into the boat. Will this be OK? Did I screw anything up? Thanks again for the help. After I'm done with this I will be just about ready for the lake!"

"You may want to make sure that bolt 45 securing the tiller arm (part 44) to the steering yoke (2) is tight. Otherwise, the splines in the steering yoke will wear out and you will start having difficulties steering and eventually reach an extreme point where you won't be able to steer the boat anymore.

"You've been very helpful. Thanks again! I will make sure the steering is tight by tightening bold (45), oh, and everything is together and working perfectly now. The headache is out of the way now. On to other fun things...."
