"hello All,

I would like to replace my 1996 175 EFI with a new Optimax.

However, I was told that I'll miss the thrust of my EFI, because the Optimax is much more tame.

Here, in Italy, the XS Pro has no CE certificate, and cannot be registered, so I wonder if I'll be satisfied with the standard Optimax, given that I have a 19 ski boat and need a good holeshot to pull my skiers.

thanks for your advice,
ciao,
-GianLuca"

"Not sure who is giving your information.

Both the 175 EFI and the Opti utilize Merc's 2.5 litre block and the same gears.

The Opti is definately more high tech in it's fuel system with significantly more components etc, but otherwise, without the assistance of a computer montiored test tank I severely doubt that you would notice any difference at all between the performance of the two motors.

The Opti will allow you to comply with emission regulations, otherwise, I can not think of a valid reason to swap motors.

The one difference between the two is, depending on shaft length, the Opti will tip the scales at 50-75 pounds heavier than the EFI, meaning a little more weight hangin' off the stern.

For low end torque, which will translate into a great hole shot, there is nothing on the market today that can even come close to comparing with the Opti in that horsepower range - and yes, that includes Evinrude's ETEC...."
