I'm replacing the seals on

I'm replacing the seals on my 1966 Johnson 20hp. Do I need some kind of sealant (lock-tite type) around the spaghetti seal on hte lower housing? The bolts on the housing? Anywhere else? Thanks

"Just use grease on the bolts.

"Just use grease on the bolts. You don't want them locked in there. Once tightened securely, they'll stay there.

The spaghetti seal..... it has always been recommended to use OMC Adhesive. Bombardier still has it in stock at your dealership but under their own name. Someone here will come up with the present name."

Thank you sir -this "newbi

Thank you sir -this "newbie" appreciates it. There is one bolt that is "non-standard" someone put in because they lost the other and then used silicone sealant -that seal has broken and caused a fluid leak so I'm just going to reseal the whole lower unit.

The screws in the lower units

The screws in the lower units such as yours use 1/4 x 20 threaded screws. Perhaps you can install a 1/4x20 stainless steel heli coil to return those threads to normal. Something to think about.

"Good point - I'm going to

"Good point - I'm going to try the OEM replacement screw first -if that doesn't work I'll definitley try your suggestion. Again, my thanks"

"Joe,
I've read more

"Joe,
I've read more than a few manuals in this time frame (70's) and they all say sealer 1000 to seal gearcase halves, sealer #4 for the screws. Right or wrong, I have dipped 1000 on the tips of the screws and installed them. So far, I have'nt have any trouble doing this as it seems that the "gooyness" of the 1000 does'nt harden after time, thus making the job of taking this area apart easy. I should also say that when I do work on these types of gearcases I replace the slotted screws with socket head cap screws. It's a mess, but it seems to work. Mistake?"

"omc gasket sealing compound--

"omc gasket sealing compound------which,is permatex aviation formagasket-brush in lid...same stuff,..i have used hundreds of cans of both."

"I've also used the gasket

"I've also used the gasket sealing compound, just something to fight salt corrosion. The Sealer 1000 (do they still make that?) is also good. One just doesn't want anything that will have a locking effect."

"are u referring to 'adhes

"are u referring to 'adhesive 'M'?
in place of that,i use 3M weather stripping adhesive."

"JWB.... 3M Weather Stripping,

"JWB.... 3M Weather Stripping, that's good to know. Yes, I was referring to adhesive M.

The same substance used to be made by (and under the trade names of) Marprox Sealer 1000, and Boat Armor Sealer 1000. These I can no longer find anywhere.

Not that it matters to me, being retired, but did these two outfits close up shop?"
