Removing vro on 1999 Johnson 115?

My father-in-law and I recently purchased a 1999 lowe 180wz with a 1999 Johnson 115. First boat I have ever owned so I'm in the research stage. Boat ran fine the way it was but several kept telling my father-in-law to remove the vro on it. Well over the weekend while I was gone a gentleman supposedly unhooked it. Well this afternoon I decided to check his work (cause to me he is just a shade tree mechanic) and see if I can remove the oil tank. What I found was he just unplugged the wiring harness on the vro and unhooked the oil line going into the gas/oil nipple. He plugged the rubber oil line with a twig and a hose clamp! The side on the nipple is not plugged and leads me to believe it can suck air right there. I also traced the wire coming from the oil tank that is for the low oil sensor and it seems to be still hooked up running under the motor. Guys point me in the right direction on unhooking the vro the proper way. Thanks in advance.

Mix the fuel in your fuel tank with 50:1 oil ratio first. Disconnect the oil line from the VRO pump and block off the oil fitting on the pump with a rubber cover. You can find one easily that will fit the fitting. Disconnect the plug with the wires going to the VRO. Disconnect the wires coming from the oil tank. Bob's your uncle!

Spend the $380 and replace the VRO and it will last you another 15 years.
