Removing spark plug and coil wires from distributor - 1972 Merc 800

I've go no ignition spark on a 1972 800 thunderbolt that ran perfectly last year. I'm trying to follow CDI's troubleshooting instructions, which include disconnecting the hi-voltage wire between the coil and the distributor cap. They say "remember it unplugs from the coil and unscrews from the cap." I've got it off the coil I can't see how it screws into the cap. It looks just like a normal distributor cap plug-in. I've tried pulling in it pretty hard with a spark plug wire pulling pliers, but I can't budge it. Nor can I budge any of the spark plug wire connections. Is there some magical screw-in connection that these use to connect to the cap? I don't want to wreck my wires.

It unscrews counter clockwise, as do all the plug wires. Put pliers on it if it won't go.

Was JUST messing with one a few days ago.
