Removing pins on shifting shaft on 2013 9.8 Nissan to replace water pump

Three year old 9.8 Nissan, how do you hammer out the pins on the shifting shaft without potentially bending the rod. I don't understand why they did not simply use a carter pin or nut and bolt to hold this on.

Prudent application of the proper sized punch works. Tohatsu America sells a tool for this.

Thanks for the reply, I ended up putting a block wood between the shaft and a wall then knocked out the pin. I replaced the knock
out pin with a carter pin, will be easy to replace next water pump replacement.

I hope by carter, you mean stainless cotter. Otherwise, after the pin corrodes, you will be changing the coupler as well as the pin.
