Removing outdrive

"Alright guys, need some help.

"Alright guys, need some help. Im trying to remove my outdrive so that I can remove the drive shaft so that I can life my engine out. I have an 86 OMC 3.0L with cobra outdrive. I have removed the 6 nuts (3 on each side) and the two trim rams. I have tried ALL DAY pulling, jiggling, anything short of using dynamite (which is next). I have even hooked the engine hoist to the outdrive and instead of it pulling the outdrive off, it just lifts the back of the boat. I did not force it too much in fear of damaging something. Am I missing something. Please help?!?!?!?!?!"

"It could be just really stuck on there, sometimes you can lift up the leg since you have the trim rams off and then drop the drive to see if that will break it free. The down side is that if there was water in the bellows the shaft could be seized/rusted to the gimbal bearing or even to the coupler on the engine. Since you were planning to take the engine out anyway, can you undo the mounts and see if the engine will slide forward enough to clear the drive shaft? If the engine won't slide forward then the shaft could be seized in the coupler (not nice)."

"Just went through this same t

"Just went through this same thing with my 1988 OMC. Several things cause hangup when trying to remove outdrive. first is the outdrive gasket if someone used liquid sealant. Other is those o-rings on drive shaft really do make a tight seal not to mention the seal at the gimbal bearing housing. I actually used a prybar on the outdrive housing being very careful not to apply too much pressure on aluminum housing as this could surely break the casting. Also make absolutely sure the engine is in neutral and not forward gear to allow shaft to back out of spline. Test by turning prop with hands. When installing outdrive make sure engine is again in neutral. Like I said just went through all of this to replace gimbal bearing, new V8 long block and new bellows and new shift cable. What a job!"
