removing lower unit 2005 merc......

I would like to replace water pump impeller on my 2005 4stroke efi merc. and have a question on the shift linkage ,I cant seem to find the nut on the shift link rod (THAT IS IF THERE IS ONE ) to get the lower unit off. have shifted into fwd and reverse and dont see anything. I have not started the job yet but needed to know if there is a nut or is it a spline like the drve shaft.

You will need to tell us what hp engine you have before we can advise further..

Small HP engines have a clip device on top of the vertical shift rod. Large engines just drop the LU. A SN and HP rating would let me show you a blowup drawing.

The shift shaft on that is a spline... No need to disconnect anything... Just unbolt and it will come off...
