Joe the last time I worked on gear case I had motor off and turned it upside down and removed lower half of gear case. This time it's on pontoon in the water. Would it be easier to remove lower unit from exhaust housing? Is there anything I should look out for when removing or reinstalling? Does power head have to be removed? Also would lower unit from 1969 Johnson 25 hp work on this 1979 Evinrude 25 hp model 25952..

"Personally, I'd remove the engine. It's too nerve wracking trying to install the unit with it bobbing around... and drop one screw! I don't know if those units would interchange or not. It all depends on the bolt hole alignment, size of the shaft and splines, etc. While you have it off, match it up with the other.
