Removing lower cowling on my 4hp 2001 model# J4RLSIB

The service manual states ....
after study of Figure 39, the text says to remove the choke knob from the shaft before removing the lower front cover. this suggests that the choke knob MUST separate from the choke shaft and this should allow the lower front engine cover to come away.
How do I make this separation?
The part numbers are from the diagram.
#42 Part# 336186– KNOB, CHOKE and it must be separated from
#38 Part# 326224—SHAFT, CHOKE & FUEL SHUT OFF.

After working on it, I found that the knob requires additional help with the helping aid of a small screwdriver to push it off
by slightly lifting the locking tab off the fuel shutoff lever.

The purpose of removing the lower cowling was to get access to the carburetor.
