"Hello all hopefully you have

"Hello all hopefully you have some tips.

We need to remove the flywheel on Dads motor. We are almost positive there is a high speed coil issue.

We have a good forged puller, well I should say, it was a good puller, we screwed it on and down Friday evening. Wouldn't come off, so we left it set for the night hoping the PB Blaster would help. Sat. afternoon brought no change, so we did as some say to do and others don't we smacked it with a hammer, no change so we didn't want to hit it again. We did manage to put a nice bend in the 5/8" puller bolt (it was bent a bit from before
)...The motor is still sitting with the puller on it and to my knowledge it has not moved a lick. Our next thing is heat? Heat it up good and hot, let it cool then try to pull it?

Any ideas/tips would be awesome! Thanks!"

"Don't heat it period. Kee

"Don't heat it period. Keep turning the puller very little at a time, use a crow bar and select a solid spot and apply prying pressure whilst someone hit the puller it will pop make sure you have the flywheel nut screwed in but loose since you don't want the wheel and puller going airborne.
I use a puller from harbour freight and it came off my snap-on broke all the bolts! It came off using the cheap puller.
Pulled my 140 looper last week it was no easy task."

Well its had all the pressure

Well its had all the pressure a grade 8 bolt will put on it (the top is starting to twist) since Saturday and it still hasn't budged. I will tell him to have my brother pry on it while he hits it. We'll see if that works.

Any other options? Hints...

"A grade 8 (8.8) bolt

"A grade 8 (8.8) bolt is far from good enough, minimum 10, better still a 12 bolt. It may pay off the get the original puller compared to a new fly wheel!"

"Wow...

The puller we had was an old one, big and huge, but it had been beat on one too many times as it bent pretty good so its now a PITA to use.

I'll tell Dad to get some other bolts, or look for a puller. I have a feeling he might just take it in and have a dealer remove it. Which sucks as the closest one is 30 miles away.

We have a 4" square 1/4" thick piece of steel, with good bolts into the flywheel and that grade 8 bolt is about 1/4 turn from breaking. The steel has a good 1/4" bend in it, amazing the torque we have on that thing.

Thanks for the tips. Keep them comming!!!!"

"A good puller and a LITTTLE bit of fast heat will do it.
It is not seized, it is on a taper.
A propane torch wont work.
You need fast heat like oxy acecylene.
The prybar trick under the fly wheel just lifts the whole crank up a little bit so it has some where to go when you are tapping it down to break the taper loose.
If you dont pry it up you are just pounding the crank into the bottom thrust bearing and wont get it loose"

"When you say a little bit of

"When you say a little bit of heat??? 30 seconds? or???

Also, do you have the puller on and tight while heating? Or do you fast heat, let cool, then try and pull it?

I deal with snowmobile clutches on tapers all the time, and they are never this much of a PITA to come off, typically a pot of boiling water on the shaft and they pop...This is a bugger!

Thanks! Keep those ideas comming!!!!"

"'what grade...r the original...omc flywheel pullers?'

Seems to be 12. But it is more to it. The threads seems to be 'rolled' and not cut giving a better fit. Normal screws with cut threads will often just rip the threads off the fly wheel. Then You have the design of the screws with the threaded part at a much smaller dia than the shank, giving a bigger contact area at the head. If not using a std (original) puller, use thick brass washers under the head to correct for mis-alignments or the heads will pop off. I have in fact never broken a screw on the original pullers, but a couple of the main body has cracked in 2 pieces!!"

"It is sometimes a question of 'aligning' the puller disk properly. If not working after the second hit with the hammer, I used to shift it 1/3 rotation on the fly wheel."

Ok....

Very good info. I will pass it along when I talk to Dad tomorrow.

Hopefully he can get it off w/o having to take it in. He's at his wits end with this motor!
