Removing drive

"i have the composite ocean series drive...1st volvo...now how exactly do i remove it and where is the drain plug and fill...? also can the drive ,while in the trailered up position out of water for winter ,suddenly leak oil and then suddenly stop...resevoir was full and no leak when last checked{2 weeks earlier} now it is almost to the low line on the resevoir and there is some oil on ground although it dosen't smell like gear oil(which has a distinct smell)...and no more leak...can't see where it was comming from ...oil on ground directly under skeg but the only drip marks(now dry) go from where the props meet the drive(hub) and straight down the skeg no oil under or near zinc under props...please advise..."

"I am not familiar with the Composite Ocean Series drives. I would recommend purchasing a Seloc manual for your engine / drive. I would also download the appropriate owner's service manual from Volvo at:

It is never normal for oil to 'leak' from an outdrive. I would not recommend leaving the outdrive in the UP position during winter storage. Rain water can enter cavities of the outdrive (especially above the skeg, around the propeller shaft housing), pool and then freeze. The expansion can crack the housing thereby making it possible for water to enter, or oil to leave the drive.

I would top off the drive with oil, run it, then drain some oil to ensure water has not entered. Keep a close eye on the oil level. I suspect there is a leak somewhere...
