"Hi Gang,
Previous owner painted my DP 290 with bottom paint. Underlying paint looks good and I don't want to damage it. Had some success with press washer at haul out. Is there some type of cleaner/remover I can apply to it before press washing it a second time?

Thanks Again. Jon Allen"

"Without knowing what kind of bottom paint you are dealing with Jon, it would be hard to suggest a solution. If you want to get it all off I'd be inclined to suggest using an abrasive but be aware, I'm told that any bottom paint is highly toxic so take the proper precautions.

Even if you took the leg down to bare metal you could prime it and then apply a sloughing paint. For the quantity you would need it would not break the bank.

Are you in salt or fresh water?

"Hi Tom,
Thanks for the reply

"Hi Tom,
Thanks for the reply. The paint is copper based hard antifouling bottom paint. I was able to dissolve/remove some of it with a press .washer but it was slow going. I need to remove it because the copper will attack the aluminum. Just looking for a spray on chemical that may speed things up without damaging the factory paint on the drive which is still decent. Thanks Jon Allen"

"Jon,

The hands down best way to remove the bottom paint from your drive is with a sand blaster. Black Beauty will shoot it away QUICK, but you may want to use crushed glass or sand - much less abrasive. Northern Hydraulics sells a neat kit for short money. Check it out:

If you want to stick with chemical options I have used the following with decent luck:

I myself am not a fan of the fumes and mess they create so I always opt for blasting.

I have never tried Petit's new product, but since they make bottom paint, I bet it would work well.

Good luck, wear a mask and safely dispose of the old bottom paint."

"keep oem paint if still there

"keep oem paint if still there don't go to bare metal, and don't spend that much, use a good primer and paint with regular car paint plus urethane."
