"The Bell housing on my engine

"The Bell housing on my engine appears to be stuck. I have a clymers manual, but the instructions are not very clear for the bell housing removal. Is there something that I must remove (other than the bolts) to get the bell housing to come off. I can get a small gap b/w the block and the bell housing . . . but that's it."

"Tim,
The bell-housing is attached to the transom plate via a clamping ring (refer to parts diagram item #36, 37, 38, 39). It aint coming off unless you undo the clamping ring! Additionally, in some cases, the engine needs to be moved forward a few inches in order to provide the necessary clearance to disconecct the bell-housing intermediate shaft from the torque damper/flywheel as well as from the outdrive drive yoke and "u" joint assembly. Good Luck.

"Tim, once you remove all the bolts you should be able to remove the bell housing with no problems. However, there are a couple of locating pins (one port and another starboard) that can make the removal of the bell housing a bit hard if they are tight due to corrosion, and the other problem area could be the output shaft spline being stuck in the vibration damper. But in any case you should be able to remove the bell housing, even if with a bit of "persuasion"."
