Removing a 1988 Mariner 45 / Mercury Classic 50 powerhead Question.

Would removing the lower unit first be smart for reassembly of the powerhead? This is why I ask, the water pump tube and the shift shaft will need to be realigned when the powerhead is being reassembled sounds like a blind task I know with the powerhead on the mid shaft to align those two is not that hard because it the same as replacing the the lower unit after an impeller swap. Also on this model engine does the water pump tube plug into the powerhead or does the tube plug into a holder in the midsection that the powerhead picks the water from a pressurize chamber.......I hope this paints a picture.

No need to remove the lower unit.----Might want to remove the lower crankshaft seal housing and replace the seals.----Inspect lower ball bearing.
