I attempted to remove my 8&#34

I attempted to remove my 8" risers and exhaust elbows on my 1986 Crusader 454's. I'm guessing they are original equipment. You've got to be kidding me! I had to beat on the riser with a sludge hammer until I smashed it apart. Anyone have any tricks to this difficult and expensive job?

"John, I have posts going from November until now basically dealing with similar problems. I had to beat the daylights out of the manifolds after cutting the heads off the bolts using a BFH ( as it is known in some circles)...Mine was 10lbs. and I used it like golf club.....20 times. Never saw anything like it...saltwater welding.

Ultimately, I faced a complete head re-build and new manifolds, risers with gaskets all around...GOOD LUCK !!!!"

"Apparently I'm not alone. I guess what I am trying to do at this point is damage control. I started with the 3" elbow and I am now just hoping to save the manifolds. Am I correcting in thinking that, because the manifolds are FWC, they may be salvageable?

Other will have much more to add but I have read that FWC Manifolds could last 6-10 years ? Along with the domino effect, I know mine went bad causing water to get into the valves and rusting 2 of them.

Jeff makes a very valid point. These engineers should be made to repair and replace parts they think are SO GREAT.

Back in the 1990's I bought a new Harley touring bike. This thing NEVER found NEUTRAL in the trans. I went to the open house in York PA and while touring the plant this designer asks me how I liked that new clutch...Claiming how great it was. 2 years later they had a factory "adjustment" free at all dealers.

When I was trying to remove our manifolds I was hanging upside down looking into a mirror trying to cut heads off of corroded bolts and hammering on undersized sockets to TRY to get the manifolds off. The BFH was my only salvation. The folks here on the web site have helped to solve nearly 95% of the problems I have encountered."

I know a guy who has an older boat as I do..as an architect, he comes up with such neat stuff to add to the boat. Stuff that REALLY would be inexpensive and more functional. I told him to quit his job and work for a major company as an aftermarket accesories guy. The live well he designed built into the transom is just as amazing as the transom door we all don't have. I THINK YOU TOUCHED A NERVE...too bad we don't get paid for the RE-ENGINEERING we all must do in life."

"John, I did this two years ago. Basically I have no idea if my FWC manifolds are original or have been replaced. What OSCO told me was once the risers and elbows were removed to look closely into the manifolds for signs of any water seepage. I found none and could find none on the outside either so I did not replace them.

The elbows and risers on the other hand were another story with significant maybe 1/2-2/3 blockage. I encountered the same and had to beat them off the studs. Sounds like you on the right track."

I guess I was lucky. Someone put mine together will liberal amounts of nevr-seize. Comes apart like it was put together yesterday. It hasn't ran for 5 years so they been there awhile.It will go back together with lots of nevr-seize so I can get it apart in the future to check their condition without trashing them.Seems like a good idea.Anyone see a reason not to do this? Maybe stainless studs?

I saw in some catalog...STAINLESS STUDS... I am trying to relocate them as I am getting to the point where I can re-install the elbows.
