I need to inspect the impeller because the engine is not cooling properly. However I cannot get the lower unit off! I loosened the four bolts and the nut at the front, also disconnected the gear shaft behind water intake grills. But it is still stuck. Have I forgotten something? Appreciate your help!

Did you remove the little plastic keeper and shift rod connector from the bottom of the upper shift rod? These need to be removed so the shift rod can slide through the water pump housing. Check the parts diagram for the anatomy.

Maybe the upper drive shaft is stuck with grease where no air can get in as you pull it out? Might be better for folks with more expertise to chime in...

Maybe you can answer a question for me about the 20hp?Is yours a short shaft or long? And what is the measurement for the distance between the anti-cavitation plate and the point where the clamps rest on the transom?Looking to buy one of these 20's I found but can't tell what the shaft lengths are.thanks

CS=Crankshaft. You can also try wooden wedges one from each side and tap them in.

Thanks, I will try that!

Add some elbow grease and perseverance!!

Done that, with no luck...

It is a short shaft and it measures 15". If it is a long shaft it should measure 20".
