there's a gasket. I think the torque sequence is cast into the part if memory serves. not sure of torque.

"ok, one more dumb question then. do the plugs run through that into the head? so really all it is is a cover. nothing more?"

"the cyl head is cast as one piece with the block. If you did remove the cover all you would see is the top of the cyl casting, you will not see the piston or cyl walls. You can see those by removing one of the side covers, exhaust or intake transfer cover. So yes the cover holds the water on the cyl head, they do like to leak around the spark plug opening."

"Mike, you failed to mention in your post here that you have a 75 Force, not a 75 Merc - yes, both came from the Merc factory but very different engines.

Your 75 Force does have a head plus a head cover. The head does have a gasket between the head and the block, but there is no gasket between the head cover and the head.

Simply pulling the head cover will show you next to nothing, but will then let you pull the head off this model if you want to look in the cylinders.

The sealer you encountered under the headcover is most probably high-heat RTV sealer (or similar), which is what I would use between the surfaces.

You got some great advice here, unfortunately it was for the wrong model. That just underlines the importance of everyone knowing exactly what motor we are actually talking about..."
