Remove 50hp Bigfoot from transom

Hello everyone,

I picked up a used pontoon with a nice 2006 EFI Mercury for a decent price but it needs some transom work. I got some quotes to just have a shop do it all but they were coming back with about the amount I spent on the entire boat. I am planning to take the outboard off myself, throw it on a stand, and then hire a welder to re-weld where it is cracking to save some cost.

I have a 50ELPTEFI. When I look up a lifting eye for it, I find the part number 91-83164M. The problem is I can't find anything for under $200, while it seems like most outboards use a simple threaded hook you can get for $20. It has an eye further aft than the crankshaft but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be properly balanced. Are there any alternatives?

Thanks.

I'm no outboard wizard but manufactures don't put things on a motor that do not have a use. That to me is for lifting

Others should be along shortly

Thanks for the reply. My hesitation is thinking that it is probably just for installing/removing the cylinder block. Mercury makes a combination flywheel removal and lifting eye tool so I wouldn't think they would do that if this was intended to lift the entire outboard instead. Its just that this engine for whatever reason requires a more specialized/less common version of that tool so anywhere that sells it is $200-$500.

I did find a similar tool for an evinrude/johnson that may work. I need to go out and measure that bolt hole spacing and might just have to get different bolts for the threads in my flywheel.
