"I BOUGHT A 1988 FOUR WINNS 245 VISTA WITH A OMC 5.7 LITRE AND WAS TOLD IT WAS IN GREAT SHAPE, I TOOK HIS WORD AND NOW I HAVE TO REPLACE THE BELLOWS COMING FROM THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD ON BOTH SIDES AND SINCE I HAVE NOT HAD TO EVER TACKLE THIS KIND OF REPAIR HAVING NEVER HAD A OMC COBRA, I WAS WONDERING WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO REMOVE AND THEN PUT ON THE NEW BELLOWS, CAN IT BE DONE NOT REMOVING THE RISER?"

If you are talking about the exhaust hoses (short rubber hoses from riser to y-pipe) Removing the risers is the easiest way. Gives you a good oportunity to inspect the manifolds too. Need to get a new set of gaskets.

"MARADA 1, THANK YOU FOR THE INFO,I WAS IN THE ENGINE HATCH SEEING IF THE ESA SWITCH WAS WORKING WHICH IT WAS, WHEN I NOTICED WATER AT THE BACK, SO RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND MY BROTHER-IN LAW WHO IS A SMALL GUY GOT DOWN IN THERE AND HE COULD SEE THE WATER COMING OUT OF THOSE SHORT HOSES, TRIED TO TIGHTEN THE CLAMPS BUT NO LUCK, AND THEN HE COULD SEE THE HOSES HAD ROTTED, THERE ARE TWO SHORT RUBBER HOSES CONNECTED TO A CYLINDER OR PIPE AND THE HOSES HAVE A LARGER DIAMETER ON ONE END AND A SMALLER DIA ON THE OTHER,WHEN I GET THIS JOB DONE I WOULD LIKE TO PUT IN THE ELECTRONIC IGNITION NEXT, THANK YOU AGAIN"

Are you sure the hoses rotted?...they are often melted during an engine overheat. You'll see when you get them off.

"Ron...first of all please turn your CAPS off on the keyboard, with internet etiquette it's like you are yelling at someone. For the electronic ignition I woukld make sure you don't have any other issues to deal with first, why fix something that isn't broken unless you are having ignition problems? I still run points in my 460's, easy to carry spares and change on the water if needed and usually have other things to spend my money on, especially this year (GAS

"bob sorry about the caps i was not paying attention, as far as the ignition you are correct and also the gas, now i only hope that my exhaust bellows problem is not from engine overheating, we have a high water problem at our marina and boat club and it will be awhile before i can attempt to remove the bellows to have a look, thank you again bob"

"Ron...if you do suspect overheating you may also want to think about doing a compression test, if that block got really hot there could be head gasket problems? Anyway it's good to do one and write numbers down for future reference."

when replacing exhaust hoses what visual inspection of the risers and manifold's would indicate what condition your equipment is presently and how much time before having to replace such?
 
Look for major corrosion such

Look for major corrosion such as large pieces of metal flaking off. Mating faces between riser and manifold sould be flat and smooth for a good seal.
What are you seeing?

"marada 1, i will not be able to have a look until the water on the mississippi drops, our docks are floating docks on stiff arms but the road in is under water too deep to drive and i do not have a flat boat so will have to wait another week so we can drive to the dock"

"Ole miss has gone down enough so today I removed the exhaust hoses from both sides and replaced the old ones which were old and rotted, no sign of melting from engine overheat, when I put the risers on is it the right thing to use a gasket sealer or just use none and torque them down?"

"My thought was to use permatex on the cleaned manifold surface, place the gasket and then coat the gasket and place the riser on and bolt it down, I did not know which type of permatex to use, also when I got to the y-tube there is no flapper valve on either side and was told that to find one would be rare?"
