Remote Start Success!

I received my new battery cables yesterday. $32 delivered from tinned marine cable dot com. The 6AWG is a bit unwieldy but I was able to arrange them alongside the remote 8 pin cable and everything just fit. I hooked the positive cable to the positive post of the starter solenoid and the negative to the connector bolt of the starter itself. Hooked up a battery and tested it out. Starter seems to be in great shape. I only turned it over with the kill switch off, it is way too cold here to run water on the driveway.

So I still need to test the remote kill functionality for sure as I ran the engine dry yesterday and didn't have it hooked up to gas today, so it's possible that it isn't starting because there is simply no gas, but I have no reason to believe that the remote kill isn't working fine.

So that's about it.. The engine is running pretty well, remote functionality is fully operational (steering, shift and start). It's time to put it away for the winter and eagerly wait to bring it out again in the Spring. For $1,000 I got an 11 foot Del Quay (British Whaler) with trailer and this 1987 25HP Merc. because the seller couldn't tell me (or prove) if the engine would run. I've put in another $150 and the whole setup is fully operational. Pretty sweet deal!

Thanks to all who helped me get this going!

Had to laugh at the size of those battery cables! Bigger is better, but much smaller wires would have worked fine for such a small engine.

My Merc 850 starts fine with wires half that size.

So where is the negative cable exactly ??----Is it between the starter and the block , instead of between the bolt head and the starter? ---And if so why would you do that?

Kimcrwbr1, I totally forgot that the impeller spins when you crank the motor. I didn't crank it too much but will definitely have it in water from now on.

Ha ha Jeff, where were you when I was asking what size cables would work? :) I might swap them out some day. I honestly had no idea how small I could go and my internet research pointed me to 6AWG. They are big aren't they??

Racerone, I did go between the starter and the block. I figured closer to the block would be better. Is that the wrong way to do it?

Thanks,
Rob

Well it may put the starter out of position a bit and stress on the other starter mount..-----Myself I would remove that bolt put the cable on the bolt and then install that bolt.----The wee bit of distance for the current to go through the starter housing makes absolutely no difference here.
