Remote oil drain

"Anticipating a winter rebuild

"Anticipating a winter rebuild of our AQ125A/270 outdrive, I'm wondering what the implications of adding a remote oil drain plug would be? Of course, the oil would be sealed at two places, the petcock and a plug at the drain tube in the back of the boat to prevent water front entering the oil and from the oil leaking out.

My idea was to add a petcock of some sort to the bottom of the oil pan and run a tube from the petcock to the back of the boat to facilitate oil changes. Dumb idea? Doable? Pointless? Worth the effort? Let me know what you think."

This works very well for me installed on my AQ130C. No petcock needed...all you do is snake the tube thru the transom drain plug, remove the plug on the end of the tube and insert it into a oil drain pan or a plastic container and in 10-15 minutes it's done draining."

i get it. then you just open the valve when the oil needs to be changed. pretty smart. now if only i could shrink myself to fit under the oil pan to put it on.

"Yea, it was a pain to install on my AQ130C...the the bilge below the engine is only about 3 inches wider on each side than the engine, with only 3-4 inches between the bottom of the oil pan and the bottom of the bilge...so most of my install was done by feel and resulting in some scrapped knuckles. I unscrewed and removed the tube from the kit's drain plug fitting before installing it into the oil pan drain hole...did not want the long tube in the way as I was tightening the fitting. Then once the drain plug fitting was installed in the pan, I attached the tube to the drain plug fitting.

I am concerned about the fitting and/or tube loosening so I check once every season to make sure things are still tight. Probably no need to do so but I'd rather be safe than sorry."

"A question fro Bob D.

You say you unscrewed the hose from the fitting before installation. From the diagram you posted, this looks like the two are meant to be separated with ease?? Like you, I'll be operating in a tight space so it must come apart and go back together with ease. I guess 'loc-tite' would work to keep 'em together.

Anyone know of a Canadian outlet for this or a similar drain system? The vendor mentioned here requires a $10 surcharge for shipping to Canada

Thanks, Tom"
