Remote Heat Exchanger

"Hi, I'm looking at replacing an old 1977 PMC engine in a Seacraft with a brand new 5.7L Crusader. The only problem is that the fresh water cooling equipment won't fit where it is on the new engine because of the fiberglass deck and console. Is it possible to relocate this?

If so are there guidelines for how to do it somewhere? Mechanic at marina didn't seem to keen on it.

The other option is to purchase a motor from MichigianMotorz, where they say the heat exchanger can be put on the front OR back. This is kind of a no-name motor though and I really like the crusaders.

The current engine has a raw water cooling system.

Thanks"

Whoops! Better stick with it, 'cause rust flakes will mess up your cooler (and your day)> I assume you boat in fresh water? If so, the motor will need a rebuild before it rots away.

"I may not have made my question clear. I'm not CONVERTING the old motor I'm replacing it with a new one. The new one has the is FWC, the old is not. That's the problem, how to make room for the FWC gear in the boat with the new motor."

"Hi Bryan, on my Crusader the heat exchanger is on an adjustable bracket that slides up and down, however at the lowest position the expansion tank is still higher than the highest point of the engine. I believe that the expansion tank must be in this position to prevent the cooling system from getting air bound. However as long as you can maintain that position I can't see any reason why the heat exchanger can't be remotely located. I would guess Rick Sweeten may have a more difinite answer. Stu"

"Stu, you are right about the level of the exchanger. Although, due to the mounting configuration, the 454XL V drive motors do have the exchanger low. It is difficult to fill, but once filled it works fine, so I wouldn't sweat the height. If you can lower it enough to make it work, I would.

Rick"

The heat exchanger should be h

The heat exchanger should be higher than the thermostat housing to prevent an air bubble in the system. An air bubble in the system can make an engine run hot. If you keep the overflow tanks filled correctly and bleed the thermostat housing after installing the heat exchanger then you should be fine.

"just repowered my 28'wellcraft with two 5.7 crusader power pack long blocks old mercs were rwc-needed to install fwc kits over the bellhousing because of height restriction up-front-problem is nobody makes a rear mounted kit anymore for straight inbds, finally talked to san juan engineering and was told their kit #mc-304 would fit with some alterations(i had to cut mounting brackets to fit over starters)after i did that everything else bolted right up and after painting them cru-blu they look and work like they came from the factory that way...good luck"
