"I'm trying to re-install

"I'm trying to re-install the lower unit on a V-6 Johnson 225 (1990). Old one came off very easily. Can't get the new one in place. Oh yeah, forgot to tell you, I'm doing this with the boat in the water. I suspect my biggest problem is that I can't get decent alignment under these conditions. (Working over the side of smaller boat pulled along side the boat being repaired.) Does anyone know any trick to getting the unit aligned under such adverse installation scenario? And no, I am not writing from a mental institution."

"You need to install threaded rod and slowly ,SLOWLY pull the unit into position and then install the regular bolts."

"The threaded rod/ bolt route

"The threaded rod/ bolt route is what I was planning to try tomorrow. I figured two up front and one in the back? I have also found that using a ratchet stap around the lower unit and over the powerhead I can pull it into place more easily. I wanted to see if anyone had any success with the threaded rods/ bolts, or any other ideas. Thanks for responding."

"Martino.... The problem is th

"Martino.... The problem is that the top of the shift rod hits the edge of the hole that it needs to go thru just below the powerhead, at the hood pan area.

It's best to get the two pan sides out of the way (remove them), then have another person armed with a hefty screwdriver so that they can pry the top of that rod whichever way it has to go to clear that hole.

Hopefully you did not turn that rod from its original setting as the measurement from the top edge of the lower unit to the center of that top shift rod hole is quite critical!"
