" I have a 1985 175 Johnson,&#

" I have a 1985 175 Johnson,(water cooled reg/rec.) when I crank the engine the tach registers but when engine starts does not read. After about 15min. running the tach works fine from then on as long as engine is hot, the volts read about 12 when not working and 13-14 when working. Is there any test I can do to make sure its the reg./rec. Also if I use a jumper wire from terminal board grey wire to tach works fine.
Any help greatly appreciated! thanx. "

"Gar.... The gray wire leading

"Gar.... The gray wire leading from that water cooled reg/rectifier is connected to a gray wire that leads to the tach. Remove that gray tach wire and connect it to the yellow/gray wire that leads from the stator assy. If your tach now operates as it should, the water cooled reg/rectifier assy is faulty. (I must admit I never saw one act like that though).

If your charging system is a 35 amp system, you're stuck with that water cooled setup. However, if your charging system is one of the lower amp charging systems, you can do away with that water cooled system, and install the smaller (and less costly) rectifiers.
