rectifier regulator

Hi again, I'v just bought a cheap and hopefully not to nasty rec reg for my o/b 2001 merc/mariner 40hp, It is pull start and never had a charging system from new . I would like to hook up a rec reg to keep my battery topped up for sounder and lighting. The one I bought is the same as this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/12V-REGULATO...orcycle_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e5f564853 as you can see its not the same as the correct one but I think it should do the job, I have got the two yellow wires comeing from the stator tracked down so as far as i can see they go to two of the pins and then i'm left with dc positive and earth. What I really need to know is there any chance of damaging my engine electrics by useing a differant rec reg, like starting the engine without the battery connected, or if the rec reg is to small to handle what the engine is putting out. any advice would be great.
