" I have a 76 mercury 402 that had a bad wiring harness and it fried my stator, switchbox and rectifier, replaced all these and rewired (according to manual),and new ignition switch. My rectifier blew again, I don't want to take it to the shop. Any help? thanks "

"David.... Mercurys aren't

"David.... Mercurys aren't my line of expertise but rectifiers are a common item. Check the terminal where the red lead of the rectifier attaches. It must be a positive voltage 12v + . Rectifiers will not tolerate reverse polarity. If you get a negative voltage reading at that terminal, something is wired wrong.

" David... I had a problem in

" David... I had a problem in the past and ended up blowing 2 rectifiers I was told that the connection to the battery post should be tight and that would solve the problem... so $400.00 dollars later and 3/4 inch turn on the battery post, I have not had any further problems yet.

Here is a very worthy piece o

Here is a very worthy piece of info....................Radio shack has rectifiers that work better than O.E.M (to sensetive) and the price...........4.00$ I just installed a 50v/25A and it was as easy as crimping on a couple male connectors. If you like you can put an inline fuse (fusible link) in the path but it should be just over MAX. VOLTAGE OUTPUT.It would go on the red wire. The other wires that go to the stator are A/C and shouldnt ever cause a diode to short.
