I have a 2000 75 hp Mercury 4 stroke that is burning up rectifiers, been through 3 in one year-- 2 back to back then ran two solid months good, took out of storage ran one day and just sitting at dock key off rectifier started smoking. put new one in, engine was running good then rectifier started smoking again. I am suspicious the stator is bad but do not know how to check it. any guidance????

What kind of battery are you running? If your using maintenance free or gel type batteries that could be your problem. For sure check stator output with a DVA adaptor if good replace the rect/reg and install a lead acid type battery they can handle the higher voltages produced at high rpms. Adding a high amp draw appliance will help with overvoltage issues as well. Get a 12 volt refrigerated ice chest and turn it on any time the engine is running.

To test the stator set your ohm meter to RX1 and test between the two white wires it should be between 0.32 and 0.48 ohms. Do you have a volt meter on the dash? If battery voltage goes above 14.5 volts the regulator is bad or the battery needs replaced.
