"Ive got a 1987 Evinrude XP150 V6. Today out on the river after being started for 5 min smoke boiled out of the engine cover. After inspecting, the Rectifier was burning up. It has the part number 583268 stamped on it. Im assuming this is the original one. My question is why would it burn up like that? Could it be that its over 20 yrs old or is some other component putting too much current through it?"

"There are multiple reasons for a regulator to burn out.
Age might be, short in the charging system/battery and not to forget :impeller/thermostat system.
The regulator is water cooled and sits in the water jacket on top of the cylinder. A weak impeller, leaking thermostat or valve system might lead to an air pocket on top, and no water cooling for the regulator."

"In addition to Morten's usual on target reply, I would ad that the usual number one indication that something is amiss with the water cooled regulator/rectifier is having the tachometer becoming erratic."

"I didnt notice anything with the tach. Im not sure how long its been since the impeller has been changed. It is my father in laws boat, he passed away last year and I try to keep it going by taking it out now and then for my mother in law. I did notice the water coming out of the outlet. What would a leaking thermostat do not open properly?"

A leaking thermostat will/migh

A leaking thermostat will/might reduce the pressure in the cooling system allowing drain be bigger than input. That might create the air pocket.

"Ok, my tacho is a bit erratic.
Charge shows 16 volts when planing and 14 volts at idle.
Are these figures too high please?"
