Recoiling a pull rope?

I have a blue Merc, I believe it’s 80’s? My pull cord broke so I took it apart but I cannot for the life of my get the spring to re-engage. Anyone have videos or pics that could help?

Found these instructions from a 1975-8 manual - they might apply

More than likely if the cord is in one piece the spring is broke.
