Rebuilt VP 145A?

Hello, We're looking to purchase a 1981 houseboat. It uses a Volvo Penta 145A motor. When we test drove it, we got smoked out by white smoke. I believe the head gaskets blown. We'd like to know where we could possibly find a replacement motor if that's the case. We're going to compression test it this weekend and see if our mechanic can find the problem. If it comes down to it and we get the boat, we may or may not replace the motor. Was wondering if anyone could help point me in the right direction as where to find a rebuilt one we can just swap right in. Thanks!!

Probably cheaper to just have the head gasket replaced. The bottom ends on these motors are pretty sturdy and rarely have problems. I am going to be replacing the head on my AQ120B soon and of all the things I've read and seen on Youtube it doesn't look too complicated. Plus you can take a look at ancillary parts to see if they need replacing or cleaning like exhaust manifold, timing belt and pulley, water pump impeller, etc. maybe take the carb out and have it rebuilt. It will seem like a new motor at a fraction of the cost. Don't let the mechanic bamboozle you, it's one of the more simpler motors to work on.
