Rebuilt transom, need help trying to figure out how to cut gimbal hole

I originally had an omc buick 225 in my boat, I took it out and realized most of the transom was rotten. I rebuilt the transom, very sturdy. I need to cut a hole for the gimbal to mount to. I think i'm going to cut a template from the donor boat, but how should I figure out where to cut the passageway and what I need to know about the situation.

IDK if it matters but the outdrive is a pre-alpha.

Thanks,

Jason

You need an istallation manual.

But here is some info from a manual.

you will need at least the drawing that is in the crappy picture within the picture. If you can get to a marine/boat reatiailer they may have the info you need as they often come in new boats with the paper work and typically get discarded as the boat manufactures have all the jigs and tools and dont need the paperwork.

NOTE: be very careful on the X demension, too low and the boat will be a slug, to high and it will be quick off the line but will cavitate too soon.

The X demension is where two identical boats will run totaly different based on the hieght of the hole. In other words the higher the faster BUT too high and it will cavitate.

Be very careful amd measure everything at least three times!

Hope this helps but remember it is only a guide from the internet and is not meant to be the one and only way to do this. Only to give you an idea of what is involved..........

If this is unreadable due to limits send me a email and I will send the picture to you and you can zoom in then.

Is the transom assembly pre alpha also? If it is and you are going to do this, do it right and get a newer transom assembly.

Agreed.......a gen II would be best........at least up to date but I dont think it is that new.

he is using a 470 package out of a donor boat I believe.....so it should at least be a mr to alpha I gen I, I would hope.....

Maybe he knows the year............he has had several posts so I am not sure what year the motor/transom assembly is.

I did what you are attempting already. Do as kghost suggests! He is right on! that is what I used to do mine. Like kghost suggested, it is a one shot deal with the x dimension. And there is a specific height with relation to the bottom of hull at transom where the boat will plane and the specific height of the upper unit fin. I am not sure what that would be and could very well be slightly different depending on the type of hull you are working on. Read all of that information very carefully before you do any cutting. I took alot of measurements, checked and rechecked, drew an hour glass type shape with pencil so I could wipe off the transom if it had to be changed. I also cut out the transom drain plug first just to be safe. good luck, Tom

Thanks for all the help guys, i'm a little confused about the rear upper mount without a lower rear. It seems like it may be a little tougher to get it in without that lower mount to help stabilize.

Huh,..??..??

I thought this is 'bout cuttin' the keyhole....

somebody told me that the 470 only has a front mount and rear upper mount, is this true? If true, will it be tougher to get the engine in?
