"So some time this summer (hopefully) I am going to rebuild the carb on my 1984 mercruiser 140. (After I rework the transom and stringers and after I put in the motor) Should be fairly straight forward, lil 2 barrell jobby. Just wondering if anybody who has done it before has any lil tidbits of usefull info that may help a first timer like me. I actualy have two so probably will rebuild em both so I have a backup. Looking for any lil details that generaly get left out of the instructions I guess. Speaking of instructions, anybody got some

"Hi Mike, I've done a bunc

"Hi Mike, I've done a bunch of those carbs, and the tricky part(s) can be taking out the jets and power valve, sometimes they can be a little seized in there, always change the needle and seat. I also like to take some scotch brite pad and clean the tips of the idle mixture needles. You'll need a can of carb cleaner to help power through some of the small passages, an air compressor an air blower comes in very handy. Under the Venturi assemble is a T bar holding a spring and check ball, this is part of the accellerator pump passage/system that prevens fuel from going back into the bowl. On the venturis are a couple brass tubes and the accell pump jets/squirt holes, you need to make sure they are clean too.. as well as the fuel bowl. The cleanliness of the throttle plates isn't as critical, and dont try to take the screws out that hold them in, you'll probably get 3 out and break the 4th, just clean them as good as you can.

Having the proper gasket under the carb is very important, I saw a carb recently that looked like there wasn't a gasket at all, and about 1/2" + of the carb base stubs were sticking up, clear sign you should have a thick gasket.

Good luck, Safe Boating."

You live close enough

Mike

You live close enough to me here in Mass so if you would like some first hand help just let me know. I have rebuilt a whole lot of carbs over the years and have a lot of misc parts that I have in boxes left over from kits.

They are not difficult but does require a bit of background (MISTAKES LEARNED) that every one deals with.

Let me know
