rebuild Rochester 2GC

Hello gentlemen,

Here's an update from my earlier thread about my engine running rough. I rebuilt the carb tonight and found the aluminum ball in the bottom of the accelerator pump well was stuck. Other than that the carb looked pretty good, a little crud but nothing unexpected. Do you think the ball being stuck is the culprit for the engine running rough at the lower RPM's? I guess I'll find out for sure when I put it back on the boat.

Ayuh,... If you'd have posted this on the other thread yer talkin' about,...
Somebody might have a Clue as to what yer talkin' 'bout Now...

[FONT=Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif]Get yourself down to a auto parts store, get a can of berrymans carb soak comes with a screen in the can, like a deep fryer.

Also get a can of compressed carb cleaner. And a carb rebuild kit.

With a clean area on a table or bench i place a old cookie sheet with sides.

Break down the carb and remove all the rubber.

Remove the jets they should just screw out.

Everything goes into the berrymans, let soak for a few hours.

Remove the parts from the berrymans, start with the lower carb housing and blow it dry with compressed air, it clean?

Piece by piece build it, make sure every passage is clean blow it dry and use compressed can carb clear blow it dry again.

Jets clean, Float, floating no gas in it ?

Push the float under water and if you see bubbles it's time to replace it.

Ok when you install the pin in the forks that hold the float are they pressing on the float tounge and not allowing the float to move freely ?

So if you did your job correctly the carb should operate freely, and when you install the adjustment screws be gentle.

Do not bend the tips. All the way in with them gently and out 2 turns to start.

Final adjustment on the water.

Have someone else drive about 2000 rpm maybe a little more and you do the final adjustment.

If you take your time and there are no distractions, you should be ok.

Good luck !

Copied and pasted here from another thread on this site, the author is me.

This is how i rebuild a carb.

Reply to your question yes the ball sticking could be part of the problem. If you did what i posted above you should be good to go.

I cannot get the power piston out. I don't wanna break it by forcing it out. Do I need to get it out or can it be left in?

Not the accelerator pump, at least that's not what the seloc manual calls it. They call it the power piston. It doesn't seem like it really needs to come out in order to clean it. I can just dunk it in with the air horn assembly. It sits right beside the accelerator pump.

soak it without removing it. Just wanted to make sure of what you were talking about.

You have a new accel pump ? Should come in the kit with a new ball.

I have the kit from this site with all the trimmings. Thanks for all the info. Hopefully I'll be boating soon. We just got 2" of snow here in Virginia so I have a little time to tinker.

So I put the carb back on the motor and the problem still continued. I also installed electronic ignition. I pulled the plugs out and saw they where black and smelled like gas. Also the number 6 plug was slammed shut so that there was no gap. I bought new plugs, gapped them correctly to .035. Also turned the idle mix screws out 3/4 instead of 1 1/2 turns. She runs like a champ again.

ok if it runs good fine.

Got me though you posted a question about the carb but you didn;t bother to check the plugs?

Let me ask you a question whats the oil smell like? Is it overly full ?

Ya, I should've checked the plugs before I did. I'm still learning how to be a weekend mechanic. The oil looks good. No signs of gas or water.

I make sure I gap plugs as I install them one at a time being careful not to touch the end on anything hard as not to mess things up. Not hard to do if you are not paying attention. glad you got it going. all the best, Tom

Thanks Tom. I bet last fall when I winterized it, I either hit that plug on the side of the engine when I was putting it back in, or accidentally stepped on it. I will definitely pay more attention from now on. Like I said, learning as I go. I've had lots of fun working on that hole in the water.
