rebuild carb

I just rebuild my 1987 225 evinrude carbs. I changed every piece that came in the carb kit. I put it all back in and it ran fine. I was wondering the only thing I did not change was the o-rings from the screw plug in the bowl. The question is do I need to change it because I could not get the screw lose at all, so I did not want to damage it. If someone can let me know Thanks!

Yes, I cleaned it all. Sprayed carb cleaner in ever little hole I found. Plus, I changed every gasket and tighten every screw. I was just worried because when I started the motor a little bit of gas was seeping thru a hole above the bowl of the carb. But I guess that is suppose to happen. She was good now!

If fuel is seeping out the carb, you have either a misadjusted float or the check valve needle is sticking. If it doesnt leak anymore your fine with the O-rings

Where the o-rings go I could not screw the plug out. That is the only thing I did not change that came in the carb kit; the o-rings. If the valve needle is suck can it unstick itself or would I have to take the carb apart to unstick it myself? In general is it normal for some residue of gas to show up in the carbs?

Started it up today without the carb cover and there was no leaks at all. Plus it started up good! Thanks guys for your intel!!!

Great to hear some good feedback. You should be applauded for paying attention. Most people ignore or even fail to check the little details.

The only thing I would be concerned about is, if you cant remove the bowl drain plugs, then you wouldnt have removed the high speed jets...
A proper carb job should entail removing and cleaning/checking those jets....

Is it possible that the plugs are part of the bowl. I read somewhere that new bowls have the plugs that can not be removed and the high speed jets are already measured. I cleaned inside the bowl spraying in every little hole I found.

Normally you would remove the bowl drain plug and with cleaner and a small wire ream out the hispeed orfice,Course thats with the bowl removed.the jets are removable,BUT they need not be removed unless it's for rejettind for change in altitude. The jets are brass and without the EXACT fit screwdriver you can do more damage than good by trying to remove them.

Yea, okay thanks. I do not need to change them, I just had a problem that the engine just turned off while approaching the marina. Thank God some lady towed me into the marina. The engine shut off just out of the blue and I took it to west marine and they told me that 2 carbs were clogged and the fuel water filter needed to be changed. Also the fuel lines were bad. So I changed all of that and cleaned out the carbs. I used every piece in the carb kit except for the o-ring that belongs in the plug. But I did clean every little hole I found and used compressed air. Now the engine turns on good and the throttle reacts when I give it gas. I think I did a good job, I least I hope!!lol
