Hello all,
I have a rebuilt 83 Mercruiser 330TR - 454 Mark IV engine that I recently put into my boat. The first time I ran it, it was fine, and then I noticed a little oil being sprayed out of the holes in the bell housing, after a few runs and about 8 hours now, I have oil gushing out from the bell housing when I'm under power. I don’t seem to have the leak when it’s idling or I rev it up in neutral, only cruising. It is defiantly getting worse each time. I am thinking (hoping) it’s the oil pan gasket, it has the mercruiser cast aluminum oil pan that doesn’t seem to have enough bolts to me. I did put a fair amount of red permatex on the end seals. I don’t have much visibility to see where it’s coming from or see if any is running down in front of the flywheel guard, I just know a lot is going into the bell housing. PCV system is clear. What I can see of the oil pan, it is dry. I did replace the main bolts with ARP bolts but did not remove or disturb the rear bearing cap (assuming removing the bolts and re-torquing doesn't count). Last run was about 50 min and it lost about a quart. I’m pulling it back out this weekend, replace both? Any other sources of a lot of oil on a new rebuild?
