I have a 1969 mercruiser 160 and all the wires are in bad shape and needs t be re-done.
Does anyone know who would make harnesses. I have a 10 pin plug. any suggestions would be helpful

I'm sure its NLA given the 6 cylinders haven't been used in decades.....three ideas:
1) get the part number and check e-bay for NOS listings - may get lucky but not likely
2) do a www search for custom made engine harness - I'm sure you will find many options.
3) Since its a small boat and the engine-to-helm harness is likely in a similar situation, you could just rewire the whole thing and save enough to buy the materials to 'do it correctly' (over a custom harness) if you are comfortable with low voltage wiring.

If I try ti rewire myself would I run wires from front to back direct and omit the plug?

I would omit the plug.....eliminates a source of problems - the trade is the hassle if you have to remove the engine.

The only 'special' consideration would be the original resistance wire in the factory harness.....if still required, you could use a regular ballast resistor.

You can find the AB&YC color codes thru a google search or the factory manual.....I'd suggest tinned marine wire and heat shrink terminals....and split loom makes for a decent installation....just avoid the 'cheap' stuff.
