Re-attach lower unit to 1988 15HP Johnson

Hello Folks,

I am replacing the impeller in this old motor tomorrow. I found a Youtube video that shows everything pretty clearly, except for putting the lower unit back on the motor. I found some internet buzz that sounds like it can be tricky to get the drive shaft back into the top of the motor, and tricky to get the shifter linkage re-connected. So, any tips? What gear should I be in to make the shifter thing easy? I found something about rotating the flywheel to get the shaft to line up in it's hole. Is that a valid tip? Any advise appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes you rotate the flywheel slightly to line up the shaft splines.-----The actual gear position DOES NOT matter.----You need enuff room to work on the connecter screw.-----The shift rod connecter screw MUST be taken out.-----On assembly to lower rod should be pulled up to the maximum and the upper shift rod down to the maximum.---That gives you the room to work.----The notch on the shift rod MUST be lined up with the hole before you put the screw in.

Rotating the flywheel can be cumbersome..... better to have the lower unit shift rod pressed down (in gear) so that you can turn the driveshaft simply by turning the propeller.

Sounds like I should lift up on the lever which puts it in gear, before I take off the lower untit, so i can use the prop to turn the shaft, and as well the shifter rod will be at full reach downward, to give plenty of room to reconnect to the linkage.

That is one way to do it.----You just need to move the shift lever to give you the most room to work on the connector screw.
