"Hello. I am trying to drop the lower unit on this motor, and am having trouble. I removed the bolt that releases the lower shift rod from the upper. Then I dropped out the 6 bolts from the botom side, but the unit will not drop down. Should the drive shaft just slide out? Or am I missing something.........big."

"Thanks for the quick response Joe, but I do not think I saw one large bolt on the back. I'll double check today. There are 2 bolts on the back above the lower unit, and 2 screws on each side, but removing them only allows the inner tower assembly to wiggle around, so I doubt they are the culprits, so I reinstalled those. My guess is that something is keeping the drive shaft engaged into the power head, either a mechanical fastener I do not know about, or it's just stuck from age. I know I am the second owner, and I just acquired it, and my neighbor remembers helping take the lower unit apart over 10 years ago, but they just kept the boat on the trailer, drained the oil, and removed the bottom half of the housing for the prop shaft. He did not even know that you can drop the whole unit out to ease repairs. I think it would be much better to have the bottom face up in a bench vice to work on it. I hope somebody who remembers working on a '65 sees my post, I cannot even find a parts list online, they all go back to only '68. The '68 looks a lot like mine, but I'm sure the part numbers are all different."

"Thanks to all who responded, special Kudos to those of you who led me to the hidden bolt. It was right were they said it would be. The bolt was badly corroded, but I got it out. Strange that one was not stainless......it will be on reassembly

. Also want to thank you Joe, I now understand you were telling me about the same bolt in your first post, but must have assumed I had the back cover off already. I'm going to end this thread here, and start a new one with my next set of questions regarding part numbers. Thanks again guys."
