I have two 454 crusader that are fresh water cooled. They also have a raw water pump on each. I would like to check and mybe replace the impellers but am not sure how to. The pump has 4 bolts holding the pully and 4 smaller screws in the back of the pump. There is very little room to get to those but I guess it could be done. Could someone explain how I should do this and if there is somewhere on the web where I could print something that could show me how to to this.
Thanks John

On mine I just remove the two

On mine I just remove the two screws holding the entire pump to it's mounting bracket located on the underside of the bracket. It is a lot easier to have the whole pump out where you can pull the impeller in tight situations.

"If you haven’t replaced them

"If you haven’t replaced them or know the condition you might want go ahead and do so. If you open it up to look at the impeller you would want to replace the gasket anyway so I would suggest doing it all if you’re going to go through the trouble. Once you remove the pulley it’s strait forward. Keep in mind too, the rotation of the impeller and that you put it back the same way (goes with the rotation of the engine). If you have room, you can do this with it on the engine. Also, when you buy the impeller the kit comes with a new gasket. I too have 454 Crusaders and it’s tight to get to them, but I do mine on the engine."

"I've done it both ways and the starboard block is easy but forget the other side. My experience is that the first few times you do it you may get much more of an education by removing the pump. If it is an E-35, two bolts on the bottom and it is off and very easy to replace or pull apart for repair. Whne you start reading the install sheets that come with the rebuild kit...you may be happy it is in your hands or on the bench."

"John:

If you swan dive into doing this, be sure to photograph and diagram the pump orientation BEFORE taking it apart. Some pump applications are made for both normal and reverse rotating engines, so they can go back together two ways (but only one is the right way).

Guess how I learned that!

"Feller's(as they say

"Feller's(as they say in Kutztown,Pa....ask Jeff)...This time last year I mentioned how I was running the stock Sherwood 35 pump with new impellers at 175 temperature and switched the port engine pump to the Jabsco 427-3000 replacement pump and imediatly went down to 155 temp while the other engine was still at 175 which lasted the rest of the season.Well over the winter I picked up another Jabsco pump. When the water is warmer and I see 175 on the starboard, I am going to stop-switch pumps-and let you know the results.Expensive pumps, but I am a believer these work better. The Sherwoods do not appear to need rebuilt yet.No such thing as too much water and less steam as well.I now carry 2 spare pumps as switching one in waves take 10 minutes.Rebuilding one is for your next destination...Todd"

"Todd; interesting data. I wonder if your E35's need either cams are have scoring on the cover or housing. In any case, you are now pumping more water!"

"John one other thing to consider while the pump is in pieces is to replace the shaft bearings. I had one go on me while going from Maine to Florida. It's no fun being caught somewhere trying to find a part in a strange place, never mind maneuvering on one screw. Good Luck"

"those jabsco sure are nice but biy have they gone up in price. we switched over because they tolerated the 'environment' better than the sherwoods.

Todd, I'm with Dave - something isn't correct in your sherwoods. I found no difference between the two when they were both 'healthy'. It's funny Bob mentioned the shaft bearings; on the jabsco's they use the same bearings as a delco 10si alternator - very common parts."

For Jeff.....How did I do on the reply above? Is your hay-burner in the water yet?4 of my friends went to Skipjack's for this year and will be down that way so perhaps we can catch up to each other.....Todd
