Has anyone changed a raw water

Has anyone changed a raw water pump on a 454 cid. I was curious to know if it is a hard job and what precautionary measures I need to take.

I have two 454 CID Crusaders in a 50 Gibson. Changing the water pump is easy for me. The one on the port side is a bit easier because there is a little more room to work. From my photo you can see that I am a little portly so it is somewhat of a squeeze for me. Even at that it is manageable.

I agree with others that is is easier to remove the pump and change the impeller. I have done it in place but why go through the bending strain.

"I will second Chucks' comments. I have less room and similiar shape and on my 34C and the job easily done while you are sittng at the bench doing it at eye level. Once the bolts are loose, mine remove easily so for just s few more turns, it is in my hands instead of that awful crouch position"

"Easy job, on Port side, a little tricky on Stb side, just do it early morning, and take your time."

"Do you need to take the oil coolers off, I have a 31 tiara it is on the starboard side but i have room to get to it"

"Simply need to remove the belt and a few bolts. No need to take the cooler off in most all cases. As Chuck and Al said...just a bit unhandy to reach, but doable.I always carry another pump onboard and when I crawl over there-the good one goes with me.By the way,I always put a little dish soap in the good pump to prevent dry starts. Then rebuild on the bench....Todd"

"Funny, I did the starboard in

"Funny, I did the starboard in the fall with my son...nice and easy to get to...I am going to do port this weekend amoung a few other things with him. It should be a tight squeeze, luckily there is an access panel in the aft cabin that should put me right on top of it. Good luck with the project, take your time, and just think how much your saving NOT spending $100/hr...."
