2008 Tahoe with the Mercruiser 4.3 MPI with Alpha One outdrive.
Recently I had some work done at a marina. They changed the bellows, gimbal, shift cable, trim senders, wires, cap, and plugs.
After getting the boat back, at random times it doesn't want to idle after going in and out of gear. It may be fine for most of the trip, but then it just starts acting up. Or it may start happening right away at the dock after shifting. The idle will drop until the engine stalls after a few seconds.
The local marina who did the work took the boat out with me and saw the issue as soon as he put it in neutral. He fiddled with the shift interruptor switch and then the boat idled. Perhaps it was a coincidence, but it seemed related to that switch.
The mechanic tried to adjust the switch but there was no improvement, it made matters worse. They seem to think that the switch is sticking leading to a bad idle.
My question is, shouldn't the shift interruptor switch kill ignition completely if it was sticking and make it impossible to run? Or will it still idle for a few seconds then die? If you get it in gear quick enough and over 1k RPM it will run properly to get back to the dock, but as soon as you put it in neutral it may stall out, or it could even stay running. It's random.
One other Marina I spoke to said it may be the shift cable is out of adjustment and "everyone wants to throw a new switch at it".
I don't know what to do. The Marina that did the work says it's the switch that's suddenly broken, while other marinas think differently. I mean the switch is located on the same bracket as the shift cable they replaced as normal maintenance when changing the gimbal.
Any help would be great and thank you!
