Ran it hot now it won't run right.

I ran my 2008 60 HP etec hot now it idles but when I apply power it coughs and Spurts like it's running on one cylinder. Then for no apparent reason starts running fine with same power I always had. I've changed thermostat and plugs. I'm wondering if I overheated one of the coils? My mechanic can't take a look until the 27th of April. I don't think it's a fuel issue as this only started after I ran it hot trying to get out of the mud in lake okeechobee. Anyone have any ideas?

Leaking exhaust cover gasket
Scored pistons
Melted coil

Any or all of the above. Just how hot did it get anyway? Hot enough to discolor the paint?

Hot enough for the temp grease to start leaking out of temp sensor. Don't think it can be any of the first three because its intermittent after 5 10 or 15 minutes of not wanting to go above idle it's starts running fine with plenty of power until I shut it off. Then it might act up again and it might not. Almost as if the plug is fowling. I'm thinking about replacing the coils. That looks easy enough.
 
Any engine that has been that hot should have the head gasket and exhaust cover gaskets replaced. Why? Because they may leak and squirt water into the cylinders, which will destroy the internal parts over time. Till then, it can cause mis-firing. While the exhaust cover is off, you can see if there is scoring of the piston skirts. Maybe these things are not a problem, maybe they are. Are you willing to chance complete destruction?

As for the coils, another maybe. It's your call.
 
How hard is it to take the exhaust cover off. Is it something I could do or do I have to wait for my mechanic to do it he is backed up 3 weeks. And no I do not want to take a chance and ruin the engine. Also running it hot was the result of unforeseen circumstances that could not be avoided. I am probably a 2.5 on the 5 wrench scale
 
Pull plugs first to see if they are super white "steam cleaned", that would indicate water intrusion into cylinders from a defective head gasket, Overheating outboards will usually fry electronic components,coils,stators, etc.
 
I will pull them again but last time I pulled them they looked like they had to much oil on them. they are iridium spark plugs. My feeling is that your right I fried an electronic component. I just don't know which one. It's going to be hard to isolate since it is an intermittent problem. Last time I changed the plugs it ran ok 2 or 3 times then started acting up again.
 
FR---There is no exhaust cover on this motor.----------Only a water jacket cover.-------------------You can not look at pistons / rings on these blocks from the side.------------Even before E-TEC days you could not on these 40 / 50 hp blocks.
 
Brian... You should have received a horn warning (steady constant buzzing/beeping) from your warning horn before that engine got hot enough to do any damage. Did you? If not, find out why and correct that problem!

Getting hot enough to melt the overheat sensor in the cylinder head is hot enough to cause all of the head bolts etc to loosen. You absolutely need to remove the cylinder heads, carefully clean the sealing surfaces of the crankcase (block) and cylinder head sealing surfaces, and install new head gaskets.

The head bolts must be torqued to factory specifications, starting with the center left head bolt and continuing on in an ever widening circle as per:

5....6
1....2
4....3
and so on...................

Don't put it off!
