"Can get forward or reverse, but can not get enough throw to get both. Have about 1" of travel in shifter cable on bracket at the motor. Both ends of shifter cable (red) are adjusted all the way in...can not take up any more slack. Moved the shifter cable to the top of the shifter bracket to get max throw. I initially adjusted the outdrive according to Stuart Hasting's 5 step method.

My initial impressions are:

1. Lower unit is worn to the point there is too much distance between "F" and "R" on the shifter lever. I have a new lower unit (not installed yet) that seems to have much less travel between Forward and Reverse.

2. My shifter/throttle (at the front of the boat...controls??)is worn. This seems to be where the shifter cable play comes from.

My questions are:

1. Is it possible for the lower unit to be worn enough that you can no longer get both gears?

2. Can the controls/shifter be adjusted to take out this slack, or should it be replaced?

3. If it needs to be replaced, where can I get one.

Thanks in advance folks. I am at work...remote...and am deciding if I need to order some parts to be home when I get there."

"I had similar problem might check shift shaft bearing, how much pressure is needed to move shaft up and down for forward and reverse."

"Thanks for the response.

I think I know what you mean...the shift shaft on the lower unit. It was sticky and I greased the shaft (no jokes please) and that helped it shift easier, but I still have problem getting enough "throw" to get both gears."
