Question regarding throttleshift linkage on aq130d280

"Sorry for the multiple posts today, but now that I got the engine running, I have am starting to work through the rest of the problems. Here we go:

The AQ130D has dual carbs. When setting them up after being rebuilt, i was able to get the carbs synced and the linkage adjusted relative to the throttle/shifter(helm) control so that it idled when the lever was straight up and so that it would shift into forward at a reasonable RPM. However, reverse is another story. When attempting to move the helm lever backwards to engage reverse, I noticed that the throttle cable was trying to push the carb linkage in the opposite direction(up). If I were to push hard enough it would likely bend the linkage where it bolts ot the carbs.

For now I adjusted the linkage at the cable and at the outdrive so that it goes into forward and I just do not have reverse. This, obviously, sucks. How is this supposed to function? I would think that something in the helm would allow for the application of throttle while in reverse. Is my helm busted?

As I understand it, there are two seperate cables going to the helm--one for throttle and one for gear. Could I just hook it up to a dual helm that separated the two, or is there a simple part that needs fixed on my helm? I have looked everywhere and I cannot find a diagram of how my helm works. Some explanation of how it is supposed to work would be most helpful.

"You haven't told us which helm unit you have, but basically they all work pretty much the same way.

Two cables: one throttle, one shift. The throttle one is connectd to an arm that is always moved by the control lever (that which you move to control the engine). When it is in neutral, the arm that the cable is connected to is has the throttle cable pulled all the way out (or "in" on some units). Moving the control lever, either into forward or onto reverse pushes the cable in and opens the carb.
There is an interlock mechanism that only connects the shift mechanism to the control lever when activated.

My guess is that the control head end is misadjusted. Disconnect the throttle cable from the control head. Put the control lever into neutral. Note the position of the arm that the throttle cable was on. Move control lever into FWD and note how the arm moves. Go back into neutral, note position of arm, and shift into reverse. Going into FWD or REV should both cause the same motion to a connected cable. If you have the adjustment on the cable off, the cable will move in the wrong direction.
This is hard to explain in words, but imagine that the shift cable is connected to an arm that is pointed straight down in when neutral. No matter which direction you move this arm from straight down, it will pull the cable... NOW... if you connect the shift cable to the arm when its NOT pointed straight down, when you move the arm in one direction it will still pull the cable, HOWEVER, in the other direction, the cable will go DOWN for a short time before getting pulled.

This is a somewhat simplified explanation as the throttle cable is not supposed to move until the control lever has moved enough to complete the shift."
