Question on tach for 23l OMC

My tach does not work. It show

My tach does not work. It shows 3K at idle and I can tell from the motor sound it's not that high. When I turn off motor tach stays around 2K. Can a standard vehicle tach work? I am installing the pertronix ignitor II kit this week & I want to verify the timing is all set.

"On the back of the tach should be at least 1 switch, try turning it, it may be in between settings, there could be a second switch/potentiometer. a small straight screwdriver will work. The Tach could be bad.
I think you can use an auto tach, i've never seen one used though."
