Question on rebuilt trim cylinder

Due to fluid leakage, I replaced the seal on the trim cylinder cap on my 1996 48 spl Evinrude. When replacing the piston and trim rod, air pressure kept the piston from going all the way to the bottom of the cylinder, but I can still replace the cap. Is this ok? Additionally, should I fill the cylinder with trim fluid or just the reservoir?:confused: Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As I understand it, these units are self bleeding. Try running it up and down several times and then see if you can add fluid to the resivoir. This may be all you need t do. Others should chime in with or info. Good luck.

Did that help?

It did and I appreciate it. I refilled the reservoir using a pump used to refill the lower unit with gear oil. The fittings are compatible. Took about 3/4 of a quart of trim fluid. I did force the trim rod/piston to the bottom of the cylinder and operated it a couple of times while off the motor. At any rate, its working. Getting the seal inside the cap is a bear.
