"I'm looking at a 73/74 V4

"I'm looking at a 73/74 V4 135 to stick on a project boat. Motor is running well, cylinders look good (as much as I can see without pulling the heads).

Have read over my OMC manuals and checked the parts lists and see that most anything I may need to replace is still very much available in the aftermarket from a number of sources and the motor is fairly simple and straight forward to work on.

So, I'm looking for the good/bad/ugly with these motors?

Bigger OMC's are out of my normal area of interest so your opinions are valued...."

"good engines...good rebuilds.

"good engines...good rebuilds...cd ignition, hydro-mech lower unit...TNT mounted externally."

"Graham....i am running a 1994

"Graham....i am running a 1994 evinrude 88 which i have run from new...last 6-7 years sets in weather at camp...many hours running time...dropped one stator and one power pack...neither stranded me..i live in crawfish country..all the commercial fishermen run outboards...they wont touch an evinrude..its all yammy,s last few years..but a large shipyard i know uses evinrude/johnson exclusively for work boats..i would buy another one if i needed a new motor if they were available..the 88 is built loose and sounds horrible for 1st few minutes after a wide open run but thats just a feature of the motor..it sounds bad enough(like a knock) that everyone i know that has bought one has returned to dealer to question it...Carl"

"i'm not a fan of the earl

"i'm not a fan of the early looper v-4's....the ones u had asked about,...are cross flows...when i first saw yamaha's coming around in the early 80's,they just looked like a cheap imitation of J & E...the real thing.,my opinion,has'nt changed,.......but they r everywhere,on the texas coast...brings tears to the eyes of a j& e guy.....evidently.......some people,..cant rem history..."
