"I have a 25 horse 2 stroke Merc. Serial is 0G288618. Does this motor have a charging system? It seems to not, but it appears to have a rectifier on board. I am confused... Also... is there a way to hook up the tach to this if it doesn't?"

"If it is an electric start,it has a charging system. If it has a rectifier, there should be 3 connections on it.On two of the connections there will be wires that go to under the flywheel. If this is not the case, you can add a charging system and could then run a tach!"

"It is electric start. At first I had thought that the rectifier was a solenoid, but after poking through the FSM, I noticed it was not. Knowing about cars, I knew a rectifier is an alternator device. Where should these wires go in order to actually use the charging system?? As of now, it does not charge, we do that prior to going out on the lake."

Two yellow wiress come from the charging coil to the rectifier. The red wire goes to your battery. Ground wire goes from the battery to the block.

A rectifier simply converts al

A rectifier simply converts alt current to direct current by allowing current passage in only one direction. It is easier to create alt current than direct current when working with smaller units. Remember autos prior to 1965 mostly used generators to create DC (direct current). They were bulky and heavy and produced low amps compared to todays alternators.

"If it is electric start,it should already be hooked up to charge. It is probably a bad rectifier if it is not charging. The rectifier is the weak link in the charging system"

"Thanks guys, prob check that tomorrow as the weather looks crappy. Just as an aside, anyone wanna hedge a guess on what it might weigh? It is a 17 ft Bass Tracker with a 25 horse Merc 2 stroke on it. Two batteries, cooler, standard array of gear. Trolling motor. Just curious what it might weigh."
