" I have a '73 Chrysler 30hp model 305HA electric start.I just put a new ignition switch on it but about 9 times out of 10 when I try to start it,it just makes a single clicking noise and nothing but I can pull the rope start and she fires right up.I have no Rectifier/regulator on the motor,it was missing when I got it.I know the rectifier mainly handles charging issues but does it affect the starting system as well?The battery is brand new and fully charged and like I said she will fire right up about 1 out of 10 times.I appreciate any help.Thanks "

"Mike....Run jumper cables from the battery to the starter, positive (+) to the starter terminal, and negative (-) to the powerhead (anywhere) as a ground. If the starter DID NOT kick in, the starter is faulty. If the starter DID kick in (the starter is good), continue with the following.

That clicking noise is no doubt the starter solenoid being engaged which proves that the ignition switch is working as it should. This would indicate either a faulty solenoid, and/or loose faulty connections. (Assuming that the starter proved good as above).

Remove the battery cables from the battery and make sure that they and the battery terminals are clean and free of corrosion, then replace them and tighten them with pliers, not with your fingers. Also check the battery cable ground at the powerhead, and the positive cable at the solenoid. If this cured the problem, fine. If not, continue as follows.

Using a heavy gauge wire, use it to jump from the battery side of the solenoid to the starter side. If the starter kicked in when you did this, the solenoid is faulty... replace it.
